The Chidhood of Nikola Tesla
The Begining of His Life Nikola Tesla was born at exactly midnight between July 9 and 10, 1856. He was born into a Serbian Orthodox family living in the small village of Smiljan, Croatia. Little Nikola was born into a hard time for Smiljan. It was part of the Austro-Hungarian military frontier, which was a defense border against the Turkish invasion. However, not even the Turkish invadors could stop this young child from living his dream.

Tesla had always said he had inherited his genius from his mother, who had invented many things just to make her household chores easier. She had once invented the her own mechanical eggbeater!
Tesla had a hard childhood. His parents were always comparing him to his brother. They always loved Daniel more then poor little Tesla.

As a child Nikola loved to write poetry and read. Often times at night he would sneak into his father's library and read. He also was very smart. In fact, he was a genius! He inherited a photographic memory from his mother, meaning that he could always remember everything he had ever seen, heard, or read. He was very creative, and at age six he had already created his own water wheel, which was way different then the water wheels of that age. He could also do very complicated calculations in his head, so his teacher often accused him of cheating.
Strange Facts
The Doctors beleived that the young Nikola might have had some strange disorder. They believed this because he had a few strange quirks. For instance, he never would touch anyone's hair, and he always counted his steps when he walked. He was very attracted to shiny objects, pearls, and sparkly jewlry. He also always calculated the cubic contents of his food. If he failed to do so, then he refused to eat the meal!
Another reason the doctors had for thinking he had a disorder was a strange vision problem Nikola had. When someone said a word, an image, (not an imaginary one, but somthing he had already seen) would flash in his vision, and he would not be able to tell whether what he was really looking at was real or in his head. This may or may not have had anything to do with his photographic memory.
